Review

The Stranger (Tony Anthony) arrives in a Mexican town and helps some bandits con some money from the US army. He then tries to get a cut, is beaten up by the bandits, and so resolves to steal the gold. Along the way the bandits kidnap a woman (who for some reason is disliked by the bandits' resident woman), and the Stranger then makes it his business to free her too.

On one level this is obviously a very cheap variant on the "Fistful of Dollars" formula: it's all filmed in a cheap looking Italian sandpit (which a bright green lake, which everyone seems worryingly keen to drink from), there's confusing bits of plot (why does the bandit woman decide she's suddenly enamoured of the Stranger?), there's an unexplained miniature railway line through the centre of the town. On the other hand, there's a lot to like. Tony Anthony is excellent as a mysterious gunfighter who always seems to be in slightly over his head and bluffing slightly. Frank Wolff is even better as the unhinged bandit chief who constantly needs to be reminded that he's "a fair man", despite all the evidence to the contrary. The plot just about holds together and the action is always compelling. It's all a lot better than it looks, provided you're prepared to ignore the obvious cheapness. (On the other hand it isn't a classic – just an enjoyable 3rd tier spaghetti western).

The German DVD from Colosseo Film is excellent, as the screenshots show. Other DVDs are reported to be much worse.
